Warriors Finish strong in Webster Tournament

Posted Tuesday, October 14, 2008 by Tom Roof
The Warriors competed in the Webster Volleyball Showcase on Saturday, a 27-team tournament played at Webster-Thomas HS and Webster-Schroeder.
A 3-3 pool record put the team in the Silver Bracket , which the Warriors won in emphatic fashion, sweeping Greece Arcadia, Wayne and Palmyra-Macedon.
In pool play, the Warriors met West Genesee, Fairpoint and Bishop Kearney.
Every school we played this weekend was a higher class, with West Genesee in the state Final four last year in Class AA.

>From the coach: "Competition like this always helps, especially when you have a measure of success ... which we did.
"The gamble is, you go to a tournament like this and don't do well ... but that really wasn't a fear with this team. I knew we could compete.
Winning the Silver Bracket title made for a nice finish after a somewhat disappointing pool play round, where we missed the Gold Bracket by seven points in a differential tiebreaker. But good teams have to learn to face disappointment and learn how to bounce back, and we did ... that in itself is a great character builder.
In fact, the way this tournament worked out,it may even help us more than if we would have had everything go our way.
Now our focus has to be on finishing up the regular season and then tuning up for the playoffs next Saturday at the North Tonawanda Tournament."
